The term tonalism describes a style of American art focused primarily on depicting landscapes, which emphases tonal values to express mood or poetic feeling. “With the arrival of spring and the profusion of yellow due to so many of the island’s daffodils already in bloom, we thought an online show highlighting tonalist works was timely,” said AAN artistic director & curator Robert Frazier. “This style of painting, where color range is limited and subtle gradations of tone constitutes the primary aesthetic, helps offer a glimpse into what makes Nantucket landscapes so special,” added Frazier.
Works continue to be added throughout the exhibition, and with close to three hundred AAN artist members, there is a vast range and remarkable selection of art available for purchase. Online works may include oil, watercolor, pastel, mixed media, photographs, and textiles.
