Blues & Hues & More: Indigo Workshop with Sayzie Carr

Blues & Hues & More: Indigo Workshop with Sayzie Carr

Presented by Nantucket Historical Association at Greater Light

In this three day workshop we will be working with two dyes- indigo and cochineal on fabric using a variety of techniques to create patterns. The allure of these dyes have captivated cultures and peoples around the world for centuries. The cochinal dye comes from insects that produces a rich range of magentas, and red, and indigo can produce a range of blues, the two dyes work well in combination to produce rich colors and patterns. We will explore resist techniques including shibori, stitching, pole wrapping, and batik.

You will also learn how to make your own indigo and cochinal dye vats should you want to continue work with these dyes after this class. You will end up with some cotton scarves as well as some yardage of beautiful hues and patterns of blue cotton. Participants are also encouraged to bring in pieces of clothing to embellish or dye.

Maximum class size: 8
