Nantucket BioBlitz

Presented by Linda Loring Nature Foundation and Nantucket Land & Water Council at Island-wide

Join the Linda Loring Nature Foundation and the Nantucket Land Council in a month-long BioBlitz to discover flora and fauna across Nantucket.

What’s a BioBlitz, you ask? A BioBlitz is an event that focuses on finding and identifying as many species as possible in a specific area over a short period of time. We’re focusing on any species seen anywhere on Nantucket during the month of July. The BioBlitz is organized through a free app and website iNaturalist, which keeps a list of your observations and helps identify what you’ve seen with a community of scientists, hobby naturalists, and nature enthusiasts.

While you’re out and about in nature, take a quality photo of insects, plants, or any “signs of life” you see like nests or shells, and iNaturalist’s community members of scientists and nature enthusiasts will help identify what you found.

iNaturalist also has online maps that show what other people have recorded, and where they found it.

To join the BioBlitz, all you need to do is upload a photo of an observation in nature to iNaturalist that was taken on Nantucket in July. That's it!

Our weekly Nature Rambles will feature a how-to on using iNaturalist and an update on the status of the BioBlitz with our friends from the Nantucket Land Council. Rambles are free and open to all! Click here for dates and registration.
