The Trustees aim to protect places of significant ecological, scenic, and historic importance. On Nantucket Island, made up of a pair of long peninsulas, Coskata-Coatue (pronounced “co-skate-uh coat-oo”) Wildlife Refuge is both a popular warm-weather destination and a wild, remote barrier beach. The area has several types of dune grass spanning more than 200 acres, as well as the largest red cedar savannah and woodland in New England. Visitors can also see gray and harbor seals routinely on the beaches. The Refuge can be accessed by oversand vehicle (permit required) or on foot year-round as conditions permit.
